About

After 5 years of treatment, Tatisa wanted to thank her husband for honoring his vow of “in sickness and in health” by presenting him with a portrait of love. Charles decided to be in the picture with her to show the power of love.   This picture launched a campaign of “Celebrating Life After Cancer” and the Tatisa c. Joiner Foundation was born.

My Breasts Do Not Define Me

(written by Tatisa C. Joiner ©2008)

Some people wonder what’s behind my smile

Why the twinkle in my eye lasts a while?

“My breasts do not define me”

Yes, the exterior is the first thing you see when you look at me

But until you get to know the women inside

Only then will you know how many nights I cried

Until you get to know me

That’s when you will see

There is more to me than meets the eye

“My breasts do not define me”

We allow society to tell us what is beautiful

From our hair to our complexion to our style of dress

That’s all immaterial

We are beautiful because we were created to be unique

From the crown of our head to the soles of our feet

Yes, I wonder

I wonder when you look at me

Are you noticing my infirmity?

Or are you noticing me?

Please do not judge me

My breast served its purpose

It fed my son

So his mind would be free to focus

My milk was pure and untouched

His belly was full of the unconditional love he supped

Do I still feel whole?

Sometimes I wonder

Then I had to put to rest the thoughts of not being whole

Losing my breast left a hole in my soul

And I cried from the loss

But not for long

Because I am strong

I AM A SURVIVOR
